Moving Time Calculator: How Long Will My Move Take?

Use this moving time calculator to estimate packing, loading, driving and unloading time. Choose your home size, helpers and access conditions, then adjust the distance. The result separates work still to do before moving day from active time on the day itself.

How Long Does It Take to Move?

A move can take a few hours or several days depending on how much you own and how far you are going. Local moves are often dominated by packing, loading and unloading time. Long-distance moves add substantial travel time and may require overnight stops or a separate carrier delivery schedule.

What Makes a Move Take Longer?

FactorTime impact
Home sizeMore rooms usually mean more boxes, furniture and loading work.
Packing statusFinishing packing on move day can add hours before loading is complete.
Number of helpersAdditional capable helpers can reduce work time, although efficiency does not increase perfectly with every extra person.
Stairs and long carriesDistance between the home and truck, stairs and difficult access slow repeated trips.
Driving distanceLong-distance moves may require breaks, fuel stops and overnight travel.

Should You Pack Before Moving Day?

For most moves, having ordinary belongings boxed and labeled before loading begins makes move day easier to manage. Keep essentials, medications, important documents, valuables and items you need during travel separate rather than burying them in the moving truck.

Moving Day Timeline

Use the calculator result as a scheduling buffer rather than an appointment guarantee. If movers, elevators, loading docks, building access or key handoffs have fixed windows, allow additional time around the estimate. For interstate moves using a professional carrier, your household goods may not arrive on the same day you do, so confirm the carrier’s pickup and delivery terms separately.

Moving Time FAQ

How long does it take to move a 2-bedroom apartment?

It depends on packing status, helpers, stairs, parking, furniture and distance. Select two bedrooms in the calculator and adjust those conditions for a more useful planning estimate.

How long does loading a moving truck take?

Loading time varies with household size, number of workers, truck access and whether furniture needs disassembly. Difficult stairs or a long carry from the home to the truck can add significant time.

Does the calculator include driving breaks?

The driving result is based on a planning average speed. For long trips, add appropriate meal, fuel, rest and overnight stops rather than treating the driving estimate as nonstop travel.

Can I use this to schedule professional movers?

Use it for early planning only. Your mover’s estimate and schedule should control the actual appointment because crew size, procedures and shipment logistics vary.

How the moving time calculator works

This OSG model gives an early planning estimate. It does not predict a professional crew or a carrier delivery window. For two helpers, the starting packing hours are 5, 8, 13, 19, 26 and 34 for a studio through five or more bedrooms. Starting loading hours are 2, 3, 4.5, 6, 8 and 10.5.

Partly packed homes use half the packing allowance. Fully packed homes use zero remaining packing time. Labor hours use the factor (2 ÷ helpers)0.62, so adding people has diminishing returns. Easy access multiplies loading time by 0.85; difficult access uses 1.35. Unloading is 78% of loading time. These are OSG assumptions, not industry standards.

Driving hours equal miles ÷ your chosen average speed. Active moving-day time adds loading, driving and unloading. Total active time also includes any remaining packing. Rest, meals, fuel stops, overnight stays and delivery delays are extra. Confirm pickup and delivery windows with your mover.

Planning notes and disclaimer

This calculator uses the OSG planning assumptions explained above. It estimates active tasks, not a guaranteed completion time or delivery date. Add time for breaks, traffic and delays. Confirm booking times and delivery windows directly with your mover.
