Start your change of address checklist
Use this change of address checklist to protect the things you need right away: a working home, active coverage and a reliable way to receive important mail. Start utility and internet arrangements as soon as you know your move details. Then contact insurers, banks and payroll teams. Ask each organization when its change will take effect.
You do not need eight weeks to use this list. If the move is close, start today and work through the phases in order. Some tasks can be scheduled in advance. Others depend on your arrival or on an agency’s rules. The phase labels help you plan; they do not set legal deadlines.
Mail forwarding and account updates are separate
USPS forwarding is a useful bridge, but it is not a complete address update. Eligible mail, forwarding periods and handling vary by mail class. Check the official postal guidance below, and update each important sender directly. A bank statement arriving at the new home does not necessarily mean the bank has changed its records.
For taxes, review the IRS options for reporting a new home mailing address. Form 8822 is one option. A business uses a different form, 8822-B. If you moved to another state, review that state’s agency records as well. Keep a short log of the organization, date and confirmation in your own files.
Make the checklist fit your household
Choose the options that apply to you. Vehicle, school, pet, benefit and business tasks appear only when selected. Renting and homeownership also create different contacts. Before you tick an item, check that the organization accepted the change and that the effective date is correct.
The move date is optional and appears on your printout. It does not calculate DMV or voter-registration deadlines. Use the new-resident DMV checklist for the destination you select, then confirm current requirements with the official agency.
Save progress or take it to paper
Checked tasks and choices stay in this browser when storage is available. This is useful if you work through the list over several days. It does not sync to another device. Shared devices may expose your selections to other users, so reset the list when you finish.

Change of address checklist questions
Is mail forwarding enough after a move?
No. USPS forwarding can redirect eligible mail, but it does not update every sender’s records. Update banks, insurers, government agencies and other important contacts directly.
Can I use this change of address checklist for a last-minute move?
Yes. Start with services, insurance and important mail, then work through the other tasks. The phases are planning suggestions, not a requirement to begin several weeks ahead. Check legal deadlines with the relevant agency.
Will this checklist save my progress?

Can I print a blank checklist without checking anything?
