OUT OF STATE GUIDE
Moving costs: plan your budget
Plan moving costs before you book. Start with your own quotes and estimates—all amounts are in US dollars.
Which moving costs belong in your plan?
Start with transport, packing and travel. Then add arrival costs such as deposits, utility setup and temporary housing. Keep estimates separate from confirmed prices so you can see which numbers still need work.
Next, compare the same services across each quote. Check whether packing, loading, storage or delivery charges are already included. Also note payment dates, since a low total can still put pressure on your cash before moving day.
Finally, keep a reserve for changes. A delayed handover, extra hotel night or longer drive can affect your budget. Choose an amount that fits your plan, then update it when your bookings are firm.

Sell it or move it?
See whether keeping an item costs less than selling and replacing it.
Count each cost once
If packing, fuel or another fee is already in your quote, do not add it again. Keep refundable deposits separate from money you expect to spend.
