Methodology, sources and limits

Each scenario = base cost + route miles × additional per-mile charge + separate DIY fuel + extra costs + storage. DIY fuel = miles ÷ loaded MPG × fuel price. Fuel is not added for a container or professional-mover scenario; include any separate fuel surcharge in extra costs.

The low and high inputs are your scenarios, not a confidence interval. Home size is an inventory label: get matching quotes for that inventory. No distance is inferred from state centroids and no market-price database is claimed. This is especially important for Alaska, Hawaii, ferries and multi-leg moves.

Illustrative example: 1,000 miles, $1,200–$1,800 base cost, $0.20–$0.40 additional per mile, 10 MPG and $4 fuel produces $1,800–$2,600 before other extras. These are invented inputs.

Common questions

Does the estimate use current moving-company prices?

No. Enter your written quotes or clearly chosen planning assumptions. This tool does not sell or generate carrier offers.

My quote includes mileage. What should I enter?

Enter the quote as the base cost and use zero for any mileage or fuel already included.

Does choosing a home size change the price automatically?

No. It records the inventory scope. Your quotes or rates must reflect the inventory you actually plan to move.
