Moving Out of State Checklist: 4 Simple Steps

Moving to another state? Start with these four steps. You do not need to do everything today. Pick a move date, then work through one section at a time.

1. Make a plan

Start six to eight weeks ahead if you can. If you have less time, follow the same order.

  • Set your move date and confirm access to your new home.
  • List what you will keep, sell or give away.
  • Choose a mover, rental truck or moving container. Get prices in writing.
  • Add moving costs, travel and money needed for your new home. Keep some extra cash for surprises.

2. Get ready

  • Book start and stop dates for power, water and internet.
  • Ask your new school which records it needs. Arrange any medicine refills.
  • Pack and label boxes by room. Keep IDs, keys, medicine, chargers and a change of clothes with you.
  • Change your address with USPS. Tell your bank, employer and other important senders too.
  • Confirm pickup, delivery, parking and payment details with your mover.

Your boxes may arrive after you do. Keep enough supplies with you for the first few days.

3. Check everything on moving day

  • Check the mover’s item list. Take photos of valuable items and any damage.
  • Read papers before you sign. Keep your own copies.
  • Check every room, cupboard and storage area before you leave.
  • Keep your essentials bag with you, not on the moving truck.

4. Settle into your new home

  • Check delivered items for loss or damage. Report problems promptly in writing and keep a copy.
  • Set up beds, the bathroom and basic kitchen supplies first.
  • Check your new state’s rules for vehicle registration and driver licenses.
  • Finish school enrollment and update important addresses.

These are planning steps, not legal deadlines. Your new state may set its own deadlines.
