1. Before you arrive

• Confirm your full address, county and the date you can get the keys.
• Book power, water and internet service.
• Ask the school district which school serves your exact address and what papers it needs.
• Keep IDs, vehicle papers, school records and medicines with you.

2. Make the home ready in your first week

• Check that the lights, water and other services work.
• Take photos of problems and report them to the landlord or service provider.

• Change your mailing address. Tell your bank, employer and insurers too.

3. Register your vehicle within 30 days

Texas DMV says new residents generally have 30 days after moving to register their vehicles. You do this at the county tax office, not the driver-license office.

• Check the insurance and ownership papers you need.
• Check whether your vehicle needs an emissions test. The rules depend on the vehicle and county.
• Ask about fees and appointments. For a leased or financed car, ask which papers the lender must provide.

Check the Texas DMV list before you go. Some military members and students have different rules.

4. Get your Texas driver license

If you qualify, you can drive with a valid, unexpired out-of-state license for up to 90 days after moving. Start early. Booking an appointment does not itself extend that time.
