The boxes arrived after the family
A family learns why a flexible first-week plan matters when delivery dates are uncertain.

The family had labeled every box by room. What they had not planned for was arriving before their belongings. Their moving estimate gave a delivery window, but they had pictured the truck arriving on the same day they did.
On their first evening in Texas, they had suitcases, snacks and two air mattresses. The beds, cooking pans and most of the school supplies were still on the truck. They bought a few basics and changed their plan for the next several days.
One thing went well: they had kept medication, identity documents, chargers and a change of clothes in the car. They could handle appointments and daily needs without opening a moving box.
In this made-up budget, two extra hotel nights at $140 each and $85 of basic supplies added $365. Their extra cash covered it, but they wished they had asked more questions about the delivery window before booking.
What they would do differently
Confirm the delivery window in writing. Keep a first-week bag with the family. Plan somewhere to sleep if the truck arrives later.

The sofa that did not fit
A couple compares the cost of keeping furniture with the cost of selling and replacing it.

The couple’s new living room looked roomy in the listing photos. A week before their move, they measured the entrance and the wall where their sofa would go. The sofa would block the doorway.
They first thought selling it would save a large part of the moving bill. Then they asked the mover for a revised price. Taking one sofa off the list did not change the truck or crew charge. The saving was much smaller than they expected.
They still chose to sell it because it would not work in the new home. In this moving scenario, they received $250 and spent $650 on a smaller replacement, with $75 for delivery and fees. The change cost them $475 after the sale.
They kept their dining table, which fit well, and delayed buying other furniture. Living in the home for a few weeks helped them decide what they actually needed.
What they would do differently
Measure rooms and doorways early. Ask how removing an item changes the quote. Count the full replacement cost, not just the money received from selling.
