OUT OF STATE GUIDE · PRACTICAL MOVING GUIDE
Moving from New Jersey to Texas takes two plans: closing out your New Jersey home and setting up daily life in Texas. Choose the destination, compare written moving quotes, plan the trip and prepare vehicle and tax records before arrival.

What should you decide before leaving New Jersey?
Choose the Texas destination and home access date first. Then compare moving methods using the same inventory. A truck rental, container and full-service mover include different work, delivery terms and extras.
Ask each provider for a written breakdown. Check packing, labor, fuel, mileage, storage, stairs and long carries. Also ask what happens if the delivery date changes. Use the DIY versus movers calculator to put the options on the same basis.
How much should you budget for moving from New Jersey to Texas?
There is no single reliable price for this route. The city pair, inventory, date and service level all matter. Build your budget from current quotes, then add the costs that sit outside the transport price.
| Item | Example amount |
|---|---|
| Transport and labor | $3,500 |
| Packing supplies | $250 |
| Travel and lodging | $650 |
| Housing overlap and setup fees | $600 |
| Expense subtotal | $5,000 |
| Illustrative 10% reserve on expenses | $500 |
| Refundable deposits paid upfront | $1,500 |
| Total cash to plan for | $7,000 |
The example keeps deposits separate because you may get them back later. Do not count a booking payment again if it is already part of the transport quote. Replace every example amount with your own numbers in the moving budget calculator.
If you will take a car separately, compare driving and shipping costs. Include hotels, fuel or charging, flights and transport while the car is in transit. Our ship car versus drive calculator helps make that comparison.
How should you plan the drive and delivery?
Map the exact addresses once your destination is firm. A trip to Dallas, Houston or a western Texas city needs a different plan. Do not rely on a single statewide mileage or driving-time estimate.
Check vehicle restrictions, tolls, weather and overnight parking for the route you choose. If driving a rental truck, confirm its height and allowed roads. For an electric car, check charging access and a backup stop for each leg.
Plan manageable driving days around the drivers, children and pets traveling with you. Keep your arrival flexible if the mover has a delivery window. Pack enough essentials to manage without the shipment for that window.
What should you close out in New Jersey?
- Follow your lease or sale process and keep the key-handoff record.
- Set utility end dates and provide a forwarding address for final bills.
- Move school, care and prescription records through the relevant providers.
- Tell payroll where you will live and work; ask it to review withholding.
- Keep receipts and records that show your move timeline.
Coordinate vehicle insurance, Texas registration and New Jersey plate return. Follow MVC’s plate-surrender instructions and keep the receipt. Do not create an insurance gap while a vehicle remains registered or in use.
Which Texas vehicle deadlines should you plan around?
TxDMV says you have 30 days after moving to register your vehicle. Texas DPS generally allows driving on a valid, unexpired New Jersey license for up to 90 days after the move. Begin the process early, rather than waiting for the last week.
Register your vehicles before applying for the Texas license, as DPS directs. Check proof of identity, Texas residency and insurance before the appointment. Contact the county tax office early about financed or leased vehicles.
Texas ended routine safety inspections for noncommercial vehicles in 2025. Emissions testing can still apply by county and vehicle. Confirm the current requirement for your address; do not assume all Texas cars follow one inspection rule.
Read the Texas arrival checklist for the next tasks, and use the DMV document checklist before visiting an office.
Does moving to Texas end New Jersey tax duties?
Not automatically. Texas has no personal state income tax, but moving does not erase a New Jersey filing duty. A move-year NJ-1040 may apply for the resident period. New Jersey income during the nonresident period may also require NJ-1040NR, subject to the filing rules.
Keep dates, housing records and work-location records. Remote work, a retained home or business income can make the facts more complex. Use the tax residency checklist to organize records, then ask a qualified tax adviser about unclear cases.
What should you do during the first week?
Check the home’s condition and essential services. Document shipment problems promptly and keep the delivery paperwork. Then confirm school enrollment, care providers and emergency contacts.
Check the exact address for utilities, school boundaries and flood information. A postal city name can cover more than one local service area. See the Texas state guide for housing and daily-life planning, and the New Jersey guide for the other side of your comparison.

Common questions
What is the best way to move from New Jersey to Texas?
Compare a rental truck, container and professional mover using the same inventory and dates. Include labor, travel, fuel, storage and delivery terms. The lowest quoted transport price may not be the lowest total cost.
How many days should I allow for the drive?
Map the exact start and finish addresses. Add breaks, overnight stops, weather and vehicle limits to the route estimate. Choose driving days that fit your household rather than treating map driving time as a safe nonstop schedule.
Can I use a New Jersey license after moving to Texas?
Texas DPS generally allows a new resident to drive with a valid, unexpired out-of-state license for up to 90 days. Check the current transfer rules, exceptions and document requirements with DPS.
